The Fair Trade movie’s impact on lives

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

The Fair Trade movie director Lauralee Farrer received an e-mail from someone in India today:

I am writing to you from Bangalore, India. I was in NY a couple of days ago and picked up a copy of The Fair Trade while browsing at this little offbeat movie store called Kim’s Video. I saw it last night and i have no words—touching and inspiring is the least I can say for the want of words.

I have always been absorbed by fair trade … it has been my great wish and desire to engage with this or sometime now and i really did not know where to begin till last night.

Thanks! We love hearing stories of how the movie is changing people’s lives…

Talking about Fair Trade

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

This doesn’t have much to do with The Fair Trade movie, but we have a relationship with Pasadena’s Ten Thousand Villages store, so I thought some of our readers might like to know about this upcoming event. From the Pasadena Star News:

Sam Bills, manager of Pasadena’s nonprofit Ten Thousand Villages store, will present “Fair Trade: For the People and the Planet,” a discussion on how fair trade benefits artisans and small-scale producers while preserving natural resources.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 3rd, at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center, 1750 N. Altadena Drive.

The program is sponsored by the Pasadena Sierra Club. It is free and open to everyone.

For more information, call 626-791-7660.

AsiaSpa magazine profiles Tamara Johnston McMahon

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

AsiaSpa article on Tamara Johnston from The Fair Trade movie, page 1Tamara Johnston, the subject of the 2008 documentary The Fair Trade, is interviewed in this article from AsiaSpa magazine. The article describes the events that led to Tamara’s decision to start Anti-Body, a fair-trade skincare business, with her twin sister Shelby and Shelby’s husband Steve, as well as the values that shape their business and their hope to change the world:

AsiaSpa article on Tamara Johnston from The Fair Trade movie, page 2Tamara says her own experience around death is that it has taught her how to find meaning in the time she has here. “It has taught me not to sweat the trivialities so much and it continues to teach me that life can be good. What a blessing to come out of so much pain. With death comes life. It is as natural as birth yet, we live in a culture that avoids talking about it seriously. I hope that by being open about it, I encourage others to find freedom in doing the same.”

Awesome, Tamara. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

Anti-Body getting nationwide coverage

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Anti-Body bath fizzersAnti-Body, the company that Tamara started with her twin sister Shelby and Shelby’s husband Steve, is getting some pretty cool coverage these days, for their fair-trade and eco-friendly products. These bath fizzers seem to really catch everyone’s eyes, because they have been featured on World of Good, Bella Sugar, and even Oprah.com!

This is a good time of year for thinking about holidays gifts, and Anti-Body products make great, thoughtful, earth-friendly gifts that give back to the communities that supplied the raw ingredients.

Another great gift is the movie The Fair Trade, which comes out on DVD this week!

L.A. Train tragedy strikes close to home

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

RachealWe join with the Anti-Body team in prayerful support of Anti-Body’s intern, Racheal. She was in the Chatsworth Metrolink train accident yesterday and is in critical condition. She’s in the middle of brain surgery and has sustained major head trauma, as well as other injuries.

Racheal has interned with Anti-Body one day a week because she wants to develop her own line of skincare products. She graduated from the University of Zambia, and is now a student at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. She and a fellow student in Zambia won a competition with their business plan to study in the US with a goal to study hard and gain as much experience as possible before returning to Zambia.

Please join us with your thoughts and prayers as the doctors work to nurse Racheal back.
