Talking about Fair Trade

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

This doesn’t have much to do with The Fair Trade movie, but we have a relationship with Pasadena’s Ten Thousand Villages store, so I thought some of our readers might like to know about this upcoming event. From the Pasadena Star News:

Sam Bills, manager of Pasadena’s nonprofit Ten Thousand Villages store, will present “Fair Trade: For the People and the Planet,” a discussion on how fair trade benefits artisans and small-scale producers while preserving natural resources.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 3rd, at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center, 1750 N. Altadena Drive.

The program is sponsored by the Pasadena Sierra Club. It is free and open to everyone.

For more information, call 626-791-7660.

Taking the lessons from The Fair Trade movie to heart

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Many of our readers do not realize that The Fair Trade was birthed by eleven people, under the inspired direction of Lauralee Farrer. One thing that Lauralee mentioned in her comments after the premiere was that the story was not only Tamara’s, but all of ours. Every single person in the 11-person team has dealt with crippling grief or loss over the last several years, and we all put that into what is seen on the screen. It makes Tamara’s story all the more powerful, because we were experiencing it with her, and, hopefully, making the same journey to hope that she did.

Tricia HardingA tangible example of that “journey to hope” can be found in the new venture of Associate Producer Tricia Harding. She lost her mother and husband to cancer shortly before joining our production team. Now, Tricia has launched a business that serves those who are going through the trauma of cancer, as well as serving family members by giving them a convenient place to purchase hard-to-find specialty products for cancer patients. Tricia says:

Early on in my husband’s illness, the doctor had given us a list of four or five things we should have before beginning treatment. I took our six-month-old son, Iain, on what I thought would be a simple shopping trip. We drove to six different locations and covered over 200 miles before I had found everything. By the time we got home, my son was screaming, my husband was anxious, and I was overwhelmed. That was the first time I thought, Surely, there is a better way.

So she built a new business called The Pampered Patient from the ground up. Not only does it sell hard-to-find products, but Tricia is making the site a “clearinghouse” for resources, blogs, and other websites that will be of help to patients and families.

Congratulations on the store launch, Tricia. And make sure to go visit her store, to see the kind of world-changing feats that are possible when you regain hope like Tamara did in the movie.

Greg King, The Fair Trade movie’s editor, posts new film

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Greg King, our wonderful editor who did such a beautiful job interpreting director Lauralee Farrer’s vision on the film The Fair Trade, just wrote us:

Hello friends,

A short experimental film of mine titled ‘Manhattan Canyon’ is viewable online, and I’d love to share it with you.  It was selected as part of a partnership between Rooftop Films and the Independent Film Channel (IFC.com), where shorts that have screened at Rooftop in the past are collected online.

My film just got posted this week, and you can find it here.

I made this piece a few years ago, as a structural/poetic portrait of New York. I walked from the furthest point I could reach on the east side of Manhattan, and shot a single frame of film at every street intersection, all the way down to the bottom tip of the island, then repeated the process from a similar starting point on the west side a few days later.  This film is the result of that crazy challenge to myself.  The accompanying track, ‘Reflecting Surfaces’, is by rachel’s, from the album ‘systems/layers’.

There’s tons of interesting shorts to watch in the collection, so have fun!

Greg

Thanks, Greg, for the link.

AsiaSpa magazine profiles Tamara Johnston McMahon

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

AsiaSpa article on Tamara Johnston from The Fair Trade movie, page 1Tamara Johnston, the subject of the 2008 documentary The Fair Trade, is interviewed in this article from AsiaSpa magazine. The article describes the events that led to Tamara’s decision to start Anti-Body, a fair-trade skincare business, with her twin sister Shelby and Shelby’s husband Steve, as well as the values that shape their business and their hope to change the world:

AsiaSpa article on Tamara Johnston from The Fair Trade movie, page 2Tamara says her own experience around death is that it has taught her how to find meaning in the time she has here. “It has taught me not to sweat the trivialities so much and it continues to teach me that life can be good. What a blessing to come out of so much pain. With death comes life. It is as natural as birth yet, we live in a culture that avoids talking about it seriously. I hope that by being open about it, I encourage others to find freedom in doing the same.”

Awesome, Tamara. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

Anti-Body getting nationwide coverage

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Anti-Body bath fizzersAnti-Body, the company that Tamara started with her twin sister Shelby and Shelby’s husband Steve, is getting some pretty cool coverage these days, for their fair-trade and eco-friendly products. These bath fizzers seem to really catch everyone’s eyes, because they have been featured on World of Good, Bella Sugar, and even Oprah.com!

This is a good time of year for thinking about holidays gifts, and Anti-Body products make great, thoughtful, earth-friendly gifts that give back to the communities that supplied the raw ingredients.

Another great gift is the movie The Fair Trade, which comes out on DVD this week!

Shoutout to Jessica for her review of The Fair Trade movie

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Jessica saw the documentary The Fair Trade at Sun Valley Spiritual Film Festival in October, and caught up with director Lauralee Farrer afterwards. From her post:

The Fair Trade is a beautiful documentary that reminds us that we all have a purpose, even if that purpose is not always clear.

We can’t agree more. Thanks for spreading the word about the documentary!
